Waste Disposal
Recycling
Most refuse haulers provide a recycling service (and the necessary containers) to their customers. In addition, Savage residents are encouraged to use the drop-off center, Buckingham Recycling. Some materials are accepted free of charge, for others there is a fee.

Almost every home contains at least some Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). HHW can include paints, pesticides, household cleaning chemicals, solvents, fuels, stains, wood preservatives, rechargeable batteries, aerosols, fluorescent lamps (bulbs), automotive chemicals, as well as any other household products that are flammable, corrosive, reactive or poisonous. HHW should be managed properly, to avoid contaminating our groundwater or endangering public health.
You can reduce the amount of HHW that your family creates by purchasing only the quantity of product that you will need for any one particular project. Then use it all up, or give your leftovers to someone else who can use them. If you store your left-over products for future projects, be sure to keep them in a safe location that will not experience any temperatures below freezing (especially water-based items such as latex paint). If that is not possible, or if the product is a banned or dangerous material, bring it to the Scott County HHW Facility for proper disposal at no charge to Scott County residents.
The Scott County HHW Facility is located at 588 Country Trail E. (Minnesota Highway 282) in Spring Lake Township, just one-half mile west of the intersection of Minnesota Highways 13 and 282, and County Road 17. The HHW Facility will be open according to the following schedule in 2007:
Wednesdays: noon to 6 p.m.
Saturdays: 8 a.m. to noon
The HHW Facility is closed for most major holiday weekends, including Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving, as well as Dec. 20 through Jan. 5. For more information, call the Scott County Environmental Health Department or visit the Scott County Web site at www.co.scott.mn.us and search for Household Hazardous Waste.
Be sure to visit the Facility's RE-USE Room, which is filled with a variety of usable products, including paint, stain, varnish, thinner, putty, adhesive, household chemicals, yard and garden chemicals, automotive chemicals, etc. All of these items are available for FREE (to anyone over the age of 18). The RE-USE Room will be open the same days as the HHW Facility, but will close 15 minutes earlier. Stop by the RE-USE Room when planning your next home improvement or craft project.
Please note, the HHW Facility will not accept automotive fluids in containers larger than 2.5 gallons, including fluids such as gas, oil or antifreeze. Other items not accepted include household garbage, unknown materials, radioactive items, sharps (needles) or appliances. Remember the HHW Facility is for HOUSEHOLD Hazardous Waste ONLY. For information on how to dispose of BUSINESS hazardous waste, call Scott County at 952-496-8477.
